BALTIMORE - It's one of the most recognized pillars of Baltimore.
The city unveiled a major restoration project to keep the Washington Monument looking its best.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake joined the president of the Mount Vernon Place conservancy, Henry Hopkins, for a tour of the restoration site in Mount Vernon.
The $5.5 million project is funded through Baltimore City, the state of Maryland and private donors.
Rawlings-Blake said the monument is a Baltimore staple and tourists as well as locals love its presence.
The project's completion date is set for July 4, 2015; the bicentennial date of the laying of the monument's cornerstone.
