Baltimore police are preliminarily calling a police-involved shooting in northwest Baltimore an attempted 'suicide by cop'.

Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said around 9:25 a.m Sunday a man approached an officer doing paperwork in his patrol car in the 2700 block of Ulman Avenue. The uniformed officer noticed the man had a raised 9 MM gun, and thinking he was being ambushed, shot the man multiple times through his car window.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital and is listed in critical condition.  The officer was not hurt.

According to Davis, paramedics at the scene reported the suspect repeatedly said, "You should have finished me off."

The suspect's gun was not loaded.

Davis said the situation highlights the dangers of the policing profession in the 21st century.
