Phoenix retrial to begin Monday

BALTIMORE -

It was a case that made national headlines, a pit bull named Phoenix was set on fire and later euthanized. Twin brothers were accused of setting her on fire.

Today a second trial is set to begin in this case. Jury selection is scheduled to start today in the second animal cruelty trial of Travers and Tremayne Johnson. They are the twin brothers accused of setting fire to a pit bull in their first trial was held in February and ended in a hung jury after three days of deliberation.

Eleven members of the jury voted to convict and a single holdout said she was unsure of the brothers guilt.According to that juror the surveillance video, which was timed out just minutes before the dog was set on fire was too blurry for her to make a definitive identification of the Johnson brothers.

Judge Lawrence Fletcher Hill, the original judge, will preside over the new trial.

The young pit bull named Phoenix was euthanized five days after she was set on fire. A city police officer found her moments after she was set on fire and was able to put out the flames -- but her injuries were too severe for her to survive.
