One man died in a northwest Baltimore fire.

Baltimore City Fire crews responded to a vacant home in the 4600 block of Pall Mall Rd just past 3:30 p.m.

Fire officials said, when crews arrived, there was heavy fire on the second story of home.

Multiple witnesses on scene said the man could be seen with an arm out the window as flames overtook the second floor. At least one person was able to bust the glass of an upstairs window as they tried to save him.

Despite the best efforts of good Samaritans, the person inside the home didn't make it out.

Firefighters arrived and put out the flames and discovered the mans body upstairs, a city fire spokeswoman said.

Neighbors said the man was homeless and was staying in the abandoned home.

There is no word on the identity of the victim.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
