A Baltimore police officer was involved in a shooting in the 1000 block of Monroe Street in West Baltimore Tuesday night.

According to Baltimore police spokesperson TJ Smith, the officer initiated a traffic stop with the driver of a gold, 4-door BMW. The officer approached the vehicle and called for backup.

Backup responded and the two officers approached the vehicle from opposite sides. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer on the driver's side ordered the driver to step out of the vehicle. The officer on the passenger side then saw a handgun.

The officer on the driver's side fired at the suspect, shooting him the shoulder.

The suspect, an adult male, was taken to Shock Trauma. Tuesday night he was in surgery listed under critical condition.

Investigators recovered a loaded revolver from he scene. No police officers were injured in the shooting. The officers were not wearing body cameras.

The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative leave. The Baltimore Police Department hopes to provide more information Wednesday afternoon.
