Officer attempts to save 1-month-old baby during protest

A group of 30 people gathered in the 3300 block of Greenmount Avenue to protest a recent police involved shooting.

During the protest Major Richard Gibson was on patrol in the area, when he was informed by citizens there was a baby who was not breathing inside a restaurant on Greenmount Avenue.

Gibson entered the restaurant and found the 1-month-old female infant not breathing, he performed CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene.

According to witnesses, the infant’s mother was one of the protestors. She went inside the restaurant to feed the infant.

Once inside the restaurant, the infant stopped breathing. The infant was transported to an area hospital, where she later died.

It is unknown at the time if existing medical conditions contributed to the infant’s death.

The exact cause and manner will be determined by the medical examiner.

The officers who attempted to resuscitate the infant will be provided with counseling services.
