An official ribbon cutting was held Monday to mark the completion of the North Avenue Streetscape Project.

Mayor Catherine Pugh joined Transportation Director Michelle Pourciau, Senator Nathaniel McFadden, Councilman Robert Stokes and members of the North Avenue Community were at the event to celebrate the project.

The $12.8 million project, which started in Aug. 2015, went into installing new traffic signals, street lights, sidewalks, street paving, replacement of water mains, concrete bus pads, plants and trees from Washington to Aisquith Street.

"Streetscape and complete street projects like this help to support city neighborhoods," Pugh said.  "Investment in Baltimore’s communities encourages economic development and improves the quality of life for city residents."

Erich March, president of the East North Avenue Community Development Corp., is happy with the project's completion, but is disappointed it look so long to get done.

"We got this money back in 2006, hoping to stabilize the community back then. 12 years has passed and in that 12 years there has been a lot more deterioration, there has been a lot more abandoned properties," said March.

Mayor Pugh hopes this project completion will lead to more economic development in the North Avenue corridor.
