New research shows potential of explaining, treating autism

BALTIMORE (WMAR) - A team of researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health are conducting a study that might help understand autism.

By using data from blood and brain tissues, the researchers found mechanisms that might help explain, treat, and prevent the disorder.

Their findings were published Tuesday in Nature Communications, a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal.

Study lead M. Daniele Fallin, PhD, chair of the Bloomberg School's Department of Mental Health and director of the School's Wendy Klag Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities, says that if they continue their study it could lead to pharmaceuticals or other interventions that can prevent or treat Autism Spectrum Disorder.
