A new report says safe spaces for drug users would reduce overdose deaths in Baltimore City.

Researchers with the Abell Foundation are advocating for the creation of safe consumption spaces, which would allow drug users to consume under supervision in effort to reduce harm and improve medical outcomes.

An estimated 19,000 people inject drugs in Baltimore City, according to the study.

Case managers and medical staff would work in the safe consumption facilities, providing medical information, sterile equipment and administering naloxone for overdose victims.

The facilities would be located on the east and west side of the city.

The goal is to reduce overdose deaths, connect users to addiction services and to decrease crime in the community.

There are 66 safe consumption spaces currently operating in 11 countries.
