A deadline to completely fund the Baltimore City school system or face layoffs at schools and cuts to school programs moves closer.
The city school district faces a $130 million funding gap, though Mayor Catherine Pugh, earlier this month, said she has come to a preliminary agreement with state lawmakers that would send the district $180 million over three years.
It still leaves a shortfall of $70 million, though the district CEO, Dr. Sonja Santelises plans to close that by cutting $30 million on spending and hiring at the district office.
Among others, stepping to the podium at the rally, was City Council President Jack Young, saying he would "look" at the Baltimore City Police budget for extra money.
"A city that gives more to the city that gives more to the police department than to the education system is a problem," young said. "We are going to look at that police budget for $10 million."
Young was unavailable for comment after the rally.
A spokesman for Mayor Catherine Pugh said negotiations with state lawmakers continues.
