It was a muggy morning in Druid Hill Park, but the sun emerged as finishers started pouring across the finish line in the Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield Baltimore 10 Miler.

Every year charity is a big part of the race and the 9th annual Baltimore 10 Miler was no exception. About 5,000 runners hit the pavement, some with charity fundraising setting their pace.

The 2015 winner, Dave Berdan, raised more than $8,000 for the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore and finished second overall Saturday. Berdan commented on the challenge of running with such high humidity.

First place finisher, Eric Schuler said he went into the day hoping to finish in the top three.

“I was trying to run with Dave Berdan,” Schuler said.

He said once he hit the halfway point, he was feeling good and pulled ahead. He didn’t look back.

Schuler, 23, of Columbia, started running at age 9 and running has become a passion of his, he said.

“I started doing it for fun, then started doing races and joined running clubs,” Schuler said.

The cheers were also a powerful motivating factor for him during the 2016 Baltimore 10 Miler.

“The crowd was probably the best of any race I’ve ever done,” Schuler said.

Top female finisher Megan DiGregorio was also driven by the crowd.

The 28-year-old Canton resident had a lot of local supporters who turned out to encourage her from the sidelines.

“I want to thank all the spectators for their support,” she said.

While Schuler and DiGregorio weren't running for charity Saturday, a number of others were. ABC2's Mallory Sofastaii raised $2,500 for Girls on the Run and Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis raised more than $12,000 for Signal 13.
