A street collapse in historic Mt. Vernon is disrupting traffic this weekend.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is working to repair a large section of roadway that collapsed in the 100 block of West Centre Street early Saturday morning. There were no injuries.

According to a DPW statement, BGE is doing conduit work in the area, but the cause of the collapse is unknown.

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works is investigating the possibility of a hole in a 72 inch sewer line and/or a hole in a 33 inch storm drain below the street.

Electricity and water lines in the area have been impacted as DPW contractors begin asphalt removal to get to underground utilities. Crews will use closed circuit cameras to investigate inside the storm drain and sewer lines to develop a repair plan.

Centre Street will remain closed between Park Avenue and Cathedral Street until work is completed.
