Morgan State University announced that former student Calvin E. Tyler Jr. and his wife donated a $5 million dollar donation to the university's scholarship fund in their names.

Tyler is a former United Parcel Services Senior Executive and was the first person in his family to both attend and graduate college.

He studied business administration in 1961 before becoming one of the first drivers at UPS in Baltimore. At UPS, Calvin quickly moved up in the ranks as a manager and later a senior vice president of operations.

"I think anyone who has had any success in life and has the ability to reach back and help others, this is the time to do it," the Baltimore native said in a release.

The university's president Dr. David Wilson was proud to announce this as the largest scholarship fund in Morgan State's history:

"This incredibly generous donation from the Tyler's will provide many talented, hard-working students with a higher education they may not otherwise have achieved. But more than that, it will help ensure the success of Morgan's mission and benefit the youth of Baltimore City, at this particularly challenging time and far into the future."

In 2002, the philanthropist established the The Calvin and Tyler Endowed Scholarship with a $500,000 donation, followed by a matched donation in 2005 and a $1 million donation in 2008.

"The Tyler's gifts have been exceedingly helpful in our mission to bring in all students who qualify academically," said institutional advancement vice president, Cheryl Y. Hitchcock.

The endowed scholarship is said to be the fifth largest donation from one person to a Historical Black College or University in history.
