The first annual Maryland Women in STEM Summit was held Monday.
The summit included a networking event, two panels, and remarks from the Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford.
The summit was put on by Million Women Mentors-Maryland.
Their goal is to build a mentoring ecosystem to motivate girls and young women to pursue careers in STEM.
MWM-MD says mentorship is the key to encouraging young women in Maryland to explore STEM.
"We have to make sure that young girls understand that this is a career path, a rewarding career path. Something that the can appreciate," said Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford.
Women fill close to 50% of all jobs in the U.S. but hold less than 25% of STEM jobs.
Monday’s summit covered why women are essential for STEM, why mentoring matters, and how men, women, companies, and organizations can get involved.
