Mayor Catherine Pugh said she wants to take at least $5.5 million from the Baltimore Police Department overtime budget and allocate it to city schools.
The mayor said she had a conversation with City Council president Jack Young about looking to take funds from the police department because she didn't want to take money from the city's youth programs.

"My discussion last week, right after the State of the City Address, was with the police commissioner about looking at $5.5 million, at least, coming out of the police department's budget because I'm going to hold them to police overtime budget," Pugh said.
The effort coincides with the mayor's plan to investigate the police department's overtime budget and establish a revised budget plan.

"I'm not looking at just overtime," the mayor said. "I'm looking at how we structure the police department in a way that is more effective and efficient."
