After the mess Hurricane Harvey left behind, it's not only humans who need help, but our furry friends as well.
A transport team from the Maryland SPCA is picking up to 20 dogs from animal shelters in Texas on Saturday.
The dogs will be picked up at an airport in Manasses, Virginia, and then will be taken to Baltimore. The Maryland SPCA reached out to the Humane Society last week to see if they could help.
According to the SPCA, some of the dogs might have medical problems, like heartworm, which can be treated.
Because of all the incoming dogs, the SPCA is asking people to help adopt the animals already in the shelter before the new ones arrive. They are open from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Foster parents are also in need because of the new animals. All of the training, food, enrichment, medication, toys, and equipment is already provided. There will be an orientation on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday for anyone interested. For more information about fostering you can email kthomas@mdspca.org.
If you cannot adopt or foster a pet, there is still a way for you to help out. You can donate money by texting 410-324-7297 and text HARVEY. This money will be used to cover the costs of moving the dogs from Texas to Maryland.
