The Maryland SPCA is caring for dogs impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

Seven dogs from a North Carolina shelter were brought up north on Saturday. The Maryland SPCA team drove to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria to pick up the dogs.

Most of the pets have fleas and four of them have serious health issues. The issues range from heartworm to having ehrlichia, an illness caused by tick bites.

Treating these issues is a long-term and costly process, so they will remain at the shelter for about three months while they are being treated. Once they are given a clean bill of health, the dogs will be up for adoption.
