BALTIMORE - The Maryland Zoo welcomed a new addition last month when Elvira the addra gazelle calf was born.
Elvira weighed 11 pounds when she was born on October 30.
The zoo says Elvira's mother Pearl has not shown any interest in her baby so they are bottle feeding her six times a day.
"Because the calf is so significant to the overall population of this endangered species, we decided that a quick intervention was necessary in order to keep her healthy," says Mike McClure, general curator of the Zoo in a statement.
McClure says they are also making sure Elvira doesn't become imprinted on humans. They are being careful to raise her in a way that would make it easier to integrate her into the herd when she is older.
Addra gazelles primarily live in the Sahara dessert region of Africa.
