Man killed in downtown crash was Orioles superfan

BALTIMORE - Matthew Hersl is a lifelong Orioles fan, known for his "ballhawking" skills.

Like so many Orioles fans, Avi Miller met Matthew Hersl doing what he loved; snagging baseballs at Camden Yards.

Miller says, "They were getting autographs and my buddy didn't have anything to sign.  Matthew had extra baseballs, so he gave it to my buddy."

Armed with a big glove and an even bigger heart, Matthew patrolled the seats on summer nights, watching game after game.  But batting practice is where Matthew found purity.

Even super fans say Matthew knew everything about the Orioles.  He needed only one clue during Orioles trivia to guess the year.  But Matthew's lasting impact won't be his knowledge, it will be his heart.

Matthew gave many of the batting practice baseballs to kids, who wouldn't get them on their own.

The Baltimore Orioles reached out to ABC2News tonight, saying they saw Matthew all the time at Camden Yards. They extend condolences to the family.
