A fire broke out in the basement of a Baltimore home late Monday afternoon, and one person was found dead inside.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 5000 block of Chalgrove Avenue in Baltimore shortly after 4 p.m., according to Commander Roman Clark of the Baltimore City Fire Department.

Inside the building a man in his fifties was found dead. It was not immediately clear if the man died because of the fire or of other causes.

A neighbor saw the smoke and went to help. He said he saw a woman on her porch and sprang to action.

"I helped take her off the back porch we kicked in the basement door and all of the flames started shooting out and she was yelling that her son was in the basement," Spanky Johnson said.

The woman is the mother of the victim and was under the care of a medic as crews worked.

"Providing that the coroner rules this as a fire death this will be number 12," Clark said.
And with that number comes some pleading from crews who've seen too many tragedies.

"Be safe, be mindful think about overloading your sockets being that this is the holiday time, were asking people to definitely water your Christmas tree," Clark said.

Fire officials are still investigating the fire at this time.
