KIPP Academy students return to school a day after lockdown

BALTIMORE - Back to school and back to normal this morning for kids at KIPP Academy in Baltimore.

A case of mistaken identity put the school on lockdown Thursday and forced an evacuation . Baltimore City police said two elementary school girls saw what they thought was a man carrying a gun.

Police said that "gun" was actually a tripod, and the man carrying it had permission to be on campus Even so, the police department and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake praised the two girls who made their teacher aware of the situation.

City police Commissioner Anthony Batts said each month, his team and the school officers hold drills to prepare for a worst case scenario; something that is becoming the new normal at schools and malls across the country.

The KIPP Academy incident came one day after a mass shooting at Fort Hood in Texas and three days after a similar case of mistaken identity led to a lockdown situation at Stevenson University.
