NEW: Baltimore City pools are operating on adjusted schedules. Details below.

Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen issued a Code Red Heat Advisory for Thursday, when the heat index is expected to reach 105 degrees.

This is the first Code Red advisory of the season, according to Health Department officials.

“With tomorrow’s extreme heat expected, it is important for all residents to protect against hyperthermia and dehydration,” Wen said in a statement. “Please be cautious and remember to stay cool and hydrated.”

Sean Naron, a spokesman for the Health Department, said that last year in Baltimore, there was one heat-related death and none so far this year.

Baltimore pools:

NEIGHBORHOOD/WALK-TO POOLS will operate three (3) swim sessions:

  • Noon - 2:00 p.m.
  • 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

PARK POOLS will operate four (4) swim sessions:

  • Noon - 2:00 p.m.
  • 2:30 - 4:30 p.m.

  • 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.

All swimmers will have to leave the facility at the end of each swim session. At the end of the intermission, swimmers will have to pay to re-enter. Officials say this rotating schedule allows new swimmers an opportunity to use the pool on days when attendance is high, and gives pool staff the opportunity to take breaks from the heat.

Admission to park pools is $2 per two-hour session and $1 per two-hour session for neighborhood walk-to pools.

“We can prevent heat from killing our citizens,” Wen said in the statement. “It’s important to stay cool, stay hydrated and stay in touch with your neighbors, especially seniors and medically frail individuals who live alone or without air conditioning during times of extreme heat.”
