UPDATE: The Harford Road Bridge reopened Friday morning after being closed due to a 20-inch water main break.

Officials with the Department of Public Works said repairs were completed ahead of schedule.

The water main break closed traffic on the Harford Road Bridge between Argonne Drive and Chesterfield Avenue Thursday afternoon.

ORIGINAL: The water main break is under the deck of the bridge. Department of Public Works crews have temporarily closed Harford Road in both directions to address the break.

"The bridge has just been in terrible shape I use this I use this bridge allot during the day and I came across it earlier today so I knew it was going to close but i wasn't surprised when I saw the water main," David Johns, who lives in the area, told ABC2.

The bridge will remain closed Friday as repairs are made.

Motorists should avoid the area, crews expect backups and delays Thursday evening and Friday.

The demolition of the bridge is scheduled for the end of the year for a 3 year replacement project. Residents have been calling for a replacement bridge for years.

"Since there's been so many delays with repairing and replacing this bridge that this is happening now," said Rose Voglein.

From downtown, possible detours include taking Gay Street to Belair Road or Hillen Road or Northern Parkway. Southbound motorists can use Cold Spring Lane, Echodale Avenue, Northern Parkway and Moravia Road.

Officials advise motorists not to wait to get near the bridge before finding a detour.
