Not all philanthropic events are about fundraising for major research companies -- some of them are about helping people directly.

Several grassroots organizations from around Baltimore City joined forces on Oct. 8 to host a coat drive and free day party at Corinthian Restaurant and Lounge.

"We do this because there's a great need," said organizer Derrick Graham. "The homelessness in Baltimore City, the poverty in Baltimore City; it needs to be done. No one's going to do it but those who are closer to it. So it's a heart-driven movement."

Among the sponsoring organizations were Focus Movers, Hood Heart, Tavon Mason Loves the Kids and Shelley's Helping Hands

The donated coats go to different places in the city like elementary schools.

If you didn't get a chance to stop by, you can still reach out to Derrick Graham and give him your gently used coats. He'll take any coats, but he's looking especially for children's coats.

"This is us helping us. That's how it has to be, folks," Graham said. "We're not looking for any folks who give us any kudos; we see what needs to be done, and we react."
