Baltimore City Schools has named the 2017 Teacher of the Year.
Justin Holbrook is a fourth-grade math and science teacher at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School.
Holbrook received the award during class, when City Schools CEO Sonja Santelesis made a surprise visit.
Dr. Santelises says Holbrook is creative, energetic, and goes above and beyond to give his students engaging learning opportunities. She continued to say that he fosters a sense of community and optimism that inspires all around him.
"Teaching is a profession that's based on serving others. Whatever we do in the classroom should be driven based on what students deserve no matter who they are or where they come from," said Holbrook.
Holbook said he doesn't call himself a teacher, rather a lead learner because he says he's learning along with his students.
Justin Holbrook has taught at Roland Park since 2010. He received his bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Goucher College and will receive his master's degree from Loyola University Maryland later this month.
