Former offenders save family from burning house

A group of former offenders from the Project SERVE program rescued a family from their burning home early Monday morning in East Baltimore.

The group was cleaning an abandoned lot nearby when they noticed a woman coming from the house asking someone to call 911. Crew members from the program went in the home and rescued the family before fire officials arrived on the scene.

Officials say the fire may have started from the basement of the home due to electrical issues.

The Project SERVE crew are employed through Living Classrooms’ workforce training program that assists unemployed Baltimore residents, many of whom are returning from incarceration, secure long-term employment by teaching marketable skills while on the job.
