The 50th annual Fells Point Fun Festival kicks off this weekend, offering about 14 blocks of food, drinks, shopping, and live music for everyone.

It also benefits some of the people affected by the devastating flooding in Ellicott City on July 30.

Restaurant employees from Ellicott City will serve as guest bartenders during the festival, earning cash when going back to work is easier said than done for many Ellicott City employees.

The event started 50 years ago as a way to raise money to combat a highway project that would have demolished portions of Fells Point. Now, the community works to maintain the historic integrity of the neighborhood.

The fun kicks off Friday, Sept. 30 rain or shine, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 2. The opening ceremony starts at 5:15 p.m. in Broadway Square. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the Stone Room of the Admiral Fell Inn on South Broadway.

Vendors and food will not be available Friday night, but will be set up Saturday and Sunday.

The Purple Experience, a Prince tribute band, opens the festival Friday at 5 p.m. Doc Marten & The Flannels follows the act with their own set starting at 7:15 p.m. The festival features two stages where around a dozen musicians or bands will perform. For the festival's full lineup, visit the Fells Point Fun Festival website.

The festival runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1; and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
