Baltimore will celebrate Edgar Allan Poe Appreciation Day Tuesday to mark the famous poet's 207th birthday.
On Saturday, locals got a glimpse of the new Poe Toaster at a celebration held in his honor.
The Poe birthday tradition dates back the 1940s when an unknown individual began leaving three roses and a bottle of cognac on Poe's grave site at Westminster Hall and Burying Ground every year on the night of his birthday, Jan. 19th.
The person, later dubbed the "Poe Toaster," mysteriously disappeared in 2009, but the Maryland Historical Society chose to revive the tradition.
Back in November, more than 100 fans gathered at the Maryland Historical Society to watch hopefuls compete to become the new Poe Toaster and continue the beloved ritual for fans.
This year's celebration was held in broad daylight Saturday, during the first and only public appearance of the Poe Toaster. Crowds gathered to hear readings of Poe's work and to witness a recreation of the famous toast.
