After the recent deaths of two elderly men in East Baltimore and Southeast Baltimore, the Baltimore Fire Department conducted a safe smoke alarm sweep Saturday afternoon.
Councilman Robert Stokes and Chief Niles Ford brought awareness to city residents of the importance of fire safety while installing free smoke detectors in homes.
The smoke detectors residents received are 10-year lithium tamper resistant detectors.
"The plan is to have all residents B'More Safe and consider the necessary improvements to equip their homes with these life-saving resources," said Chief Ford.
For those who missed the sweep, in order to obtain a smoke detectors simply dial 311 and a fire fighter will arrive within two hours to install one.
So far this year there have been 19 fire fatalities in Baltimore City.
