City Council members announced a budget deal at a Wednesday afternoon hearing in support of community schools and after school funding.
City Council President Jack Young announced to a cheering crowd at the Baltimore Youth Rising Hearing that the Council and the mayor had reached a deal on the city's budget.
Budget Committee Chair Zeke Cohen thanked the Mayor and said he appreciated her focus on prioritizing Baltimore’s children. The agreement includes:
- *$10.4 million for city schools over the next three years
- * $150,000 for the Maryland Food Bank
- *$170, 000 for the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension
- *$176, 000 for the AARP Experience Corps
- $1.5 million to support Safe Streets
- $2.58 million to support community schools and after school programs
Cohen said he and Young are sending a letter to Mayor Pugh Thursday outlining details of how the school money should be spent.
The letter focuses on three areas including; leadership training for principals, middle grade initiatives and programming in community schools.
The final vote is expected to take place at next Monday's City Council meeting.
