Carefirst donated $575,000 to five non-profit community organizations in West Baltimore Monday.

The money increases a wide range of community services, including basic medical services and youth mentoring.

A total of $50,000 that money goes to the Kids Safe Zone at Penn North Recovery Center in Sandtown.

Carefirst's total award reaches more than 4,500 youth and children in West Baltimore.

"We want to make sure that our kids are provided the same opportunities that children throughout the state are getting because our kids are just as important and we want to make sure they have these opportunities to be the greatest they want to be," Baltimore City Council President Jack Young said.

Penn North also named Ericka Alston Buck the executive director and CEO of Maryland Community Health Initiatives Monday.
