The Brigance Brigade Foundation is committed to helping families in Baltimore who have loved ones with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. One of its board members is going the distance not only for the foundation, but also to find a cure.
Todd Jennings is one busy man. When he’s not running his own technology company, he’s running in triathlons.
“Folks ask how do I keep up the energy to do all these races and do an Ironman, and I tell them my fuel is passion and OJ gives me that,” said Jennings.
He’s talking about OJ Brigance, a former linebacker for the Ravens and now a leader in the fight against ALS. It’s a disease Brigance has had for nine years.
“His passion, perseverance and dedication is something that really empowers me every day and keeps me motivated,” said Jennings.
Jennings competes in Ironman triathlons all over the country in honor of the Brigance Brigade Foundation. He first started running for the cause after learning about John Blais, who had ALS and competed in the 2005 Ironman. Blais died in 2007, and Jennings wanted to run in his honor. Shortly after that, Jennings met Brigance and he decided to run for both Blais and Brigance.
“With the Brigance Brigade, we can empower, equip and encourage and help the families in this area. It is something that I can help out locally, I think I can make a difference,” Jennings said.
Jennings is a board member with the foundation and helps with the Brigance Brigade 5.7k race each year. It’s a family-friendly event, aimed at educating Baltimore about ALS.
“It’s an opportunity for those who maybe have not met OJ to come out and learn more about his story and the battle that he faces everyday,” he said.
This year, Jennings is running in 12 triathlons and three Ironman competitions, all to raise money for the Brigance Brigade. To some, that may seem like an impossible task. To Jennings, it’s about doing good for others.
“It’s not about me it’s much bigger than me. It's about the cause and ALS and all those families,” said Jennings.
