BPD on higher alert in city and events

Orioles home stand and vice presidential visit

BALTIMORE -

Within hours of the explosions in Boston, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts explained the immediate precautions taken here.

"There is an increased presence of uniformed officers in critical areas across the city.  I've deployed tactical teams to ensure the safety of our public transportation systems and tomorrow we will be deploying special operations officers at different locations throughout the city also," Batts said at a press conference on Monday afternoon.

According to police, those heavily armed SWAT officers were in the metro, Inner Harbor and train and light rail stations in the area.

Baltimore city police are working in concert with other agencies including transit police who had a presence and extra equipment at Camden Station.

At Penn Station, Amtrak too had a K-9 officer on hand and an advisory posted for its employees to remain vigilant.

But the extra resources were in more than just places, it's at events too.

The University of Baltimore Law School is showing off its impressive new building Tuesday evening.

The governor, mayor and the Vice President of the United States Joe Biden are expected.

Secret Service was on hand this afternoon for a walk through but since yesterday, there is even more attention being paid to security detail.

"We've been planning this event for a couple of months, we've always had the security in mind but with the unfortunate, tragic, horrific incidents in Boston, clearly that's ratcheted up a little bit," said the school's V.P. of Planning Peter Turan.

The vice president in town is certainly a large event the Baltimore Police Department is monitoring, but there are up-coming events the department will watch too.

The iconic flag atop Federal Hill is at half-staff but below it this weekend, the Sole of the City 10K is planned to begin and end in the neighborhood.

Organizers tell us they are already working with city police and EMS services to make sure the event's safety procedures are reviewed and additional resources are in place.

All of it is precaution while the investigation in Boston tells authorities who, why and how those explosions happened.
