Berger's Bakery at Lexington Market has been shut down by the Baltimore City Health Department.

According to health department officials, the bakery was shut down due to a roach infestation.

The bakery must be re-inspected by the health department before reopening.

Berger's Bakery opened in 1975 and is owned and operated by Fannie and Minus. The couple moved to the U.S. from Greece in 1974 and purchased the bakery stall at Lexington Market in October 1975.

Berger's Bakery sells Baltimore's famous Berger Cookies, but the cookies are made by DeBaufre Bakeries in East Baltimore.

In a statement Tuesday, DeBaufre Bakeries said the company has passed all local and federal inspections.

"Berger's Bakery was one of approximately 400 retail vendors authorized to sell Berger Cookies but, they did not, and do not, produce them," the statement read.
