Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Sonja Santelises recommended five school closures during the annual 2016-2017 school portfolio review Wednesday night.

Renaissance Academy, the troubled West Baltimore high school that witnessed the murders of three students last year, including a 17-year-old student stabbed on campus, is one of the schools slated to close in the summer of 2017.

Dr. Gregory Thornton, former head of Baltimore City Public Schools, removed the school from a list of city schools that he planned to shut down. Santelises’ action Wednesday night adds it back to the list.

Other schools on the closure list include Baltimore IT Academy,  Northwestern High School, and Samuel F.B. Morse Elementary.

Grove Park Elementary/Middle School is also recommended for closure in summer 2018.

The closure recommendations must  be accepted by the Board of School Commissioners and then go though a period of public feedback before the closures go into effect.
