Starting Monday, city speeders caught on camera will be slapped with a $40 fine.

The first 10 cameras began testing last month. There was a 30-day warning period, in which drivers received warning notices in the mail. According to city officials, the cameras caught about 1,000 drivers a day who were traveling at least 12 miles per hour over the speed limit.

"We're experiencing over 20,000 crashes per year here in Baltimore, so this is no joke," said city transportation director Michelle Pourciau.

The speed cameras are set up in 7 school zones, but Pourciau says more could be added in the future.

"Safety is number one," she said. "This is the beginning of an ongoing program, so we're going to be adding new locations. You'll know as we are adding those locations on."
