The Baltimore City Department of Public Works is sending out a friendly reminder during the holidays in hopes of preventing another 'fatberg' and other plumbing obstructions.

The department wants to remind you that while you are preparing your turkey this week to avoid putting FOGs, or fats, oils, and grease down the drains.

They say go from pan to can, meaning instead of pouring grease down the kitchen sink, toilet, or storm drain to put it inside of a metal container or can, let it cool, and throw it away in the trash. Baltimore DPW also says before you wash your pots and pans to make sure you wipe them with napkins or paper towels.

Here are a list of things you might not think have fats, oils, and grease inside of them:

  • Coffee grounds
  • Egg shells
  • Butter and margarine
  • Dairy products
  • Sauces and salad dressings
  • Pasta or rice
  • Flour
  • Medicine
  • Produce stickers
  • Wipes

Happy holiday cooking!
