A third-grade student attending Gwynns Falls Elementary School died Wednesday after suffering a  fall in the school's hallway on Sept. 24.

The third-grader has been identified as 9-year-old Darius Clark.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that late last evening, our student passed away. Our deepest thoughts and concerns are with the family and the entire Gwynns Falls school community at this time," reads a statement issued from school officials. "Counselors are at the school to help children and staff members process the emotions they may be feeling and will remain there as long as necessary."

The child was taken to the school's health suite before being taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital by ambulance.

"According to investigators, the student suffered a traumatic head injury as a result of a fall," police spokesman T.J. Smith said. "Tragically, despite medical efforts the nine year-old died at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  At this time, this incident appears to be a tragic accident."

Jashe Cowan, classmate of Darius, considered the 9-year-old a great friend.

“Me and him was real close. It was funny because one time when we went outside in the park he pushed me down the slide I almost fell in the wood chips but I was alright,” she said.

Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating and will release the final cause of death.
