The Inner Harbor and Patapsco River posted failing water quality grades for the third year in a row.
While there has been some improvement there is still a long way to go. City leaders have said they hope to make the harbor swimmable and fishable by 2020.
"This year we are proud to be releasing our best report card yet, and I say that knowing that our grades are still far from where we want them to be," Adam Lindquist, Director of the Healthy Harbor Initiative, said Monday.
The Healthy Harbor Initiative is concerned about fecal bacteria from the city's sewage system and polluttants going into the water after a rain storm.
“This document makes it clear that Baltimore is working harder than ever at all levels to restore our streams and harbor," Lindquist said. “Now is not the time to be discouraged by failing grades, now is the time to triple our efforts to move forward with the knowledge that it can be done."
