Baltimore City students head back to class Monday for the new school year.
The new City Schools CEO, Sonja Santelises, will join mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to tour three area schools and welcome students back from summer break beginning at 8:30 a.m. Stops include John Eager Howard Elementary School, Lillie May Carroll Jackson School and Mergenthaler Vocation-Technical High School.
School officials said the district will operate on a normal schedule despite the heat, offering water to students and staff and monitoring temperatures throughout the week.
Officials released the following statement:
City Schools will open on the regular schedule on Monday, August 29.
We know that many of our classrooms can be uncomfortable as the temperature climbs. But we also want to get the new school year off to a smooth start, without the disruption that happens when schools close or dismiss early.
There will be plenty of water at all schools for students and staff all week, and we will be watching the weather carefully. If the heat does become extreme, we may make the decision to close schools or dismiss early later this week. If that happens, we will notify families, students, and staff as early as possible by email, phone or text message, social media and website announcements, and on local radio and t.v. stations.
