The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners approved the appointment of Andre Cowling as the district's chief of schools Tuesday.

Cowling is currently a regional executive director with New Leaders, Inc., for Washington D.C., Baltimore City and Prince George's County. He will join city schools on January 17, 2017.

"With his years as a successful leader and manager in both business and public education, Mr. Cowling brings skills and experience that will be invaluable to City Schools at just the right time," said Chief Executive Officer Sonja Brookins Santelises. "One of my key priorities is to ensure that the district office is positioned to provide the most effective support possible where it really counts in schools, so that students get what they need to succeed. I am excited to have Mr. Cowling join my leadership team to head up this work."

Cowling joined city schools in the newly created position, chief of schools, to connect district initiatives. He will be overseeing delivery of academic, student and operations to support to schools.

"My focus during my career in education has been on supporting staff at all levels to become leaders in their school communities, advancing their shared commitment to success for children of all backgrounds," said Mr. Cowling. "I've been so impressed by the dedication of the City Schools staff members I've met in my past several years with New Leaders, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to serve Baltimore's students and families directly in this new capacity."
