Baltimore has a new way of getting around town. The city is launching its bike share program on Friday, Oct. 28.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is kicking off the program with a bike ride from City Hall to the Inner Harbor at 10 a.m. Friday.

A 45-minute ride costs $2. The majority of the 20 stations opening in the first round of launches are located downtown. The goal is to open 50 total bike share locations by spring of 2017.

“The three things that came up the most in deciding where stations are located was number one, density,” said Liz Cornish, the executive director of bike advocacy organization Bikemore.

The stations also need to be close enough to each other that riders can return bikes easily.

However, critics of the program have said bike share does not serve a diverse population.

“It's just really shocking to see here we are yet again in 2016 planning and implementing another transit system that won't service our black neighborhoods in the city,” said Dr. Lawrence Brown, a member of the Baltimore Transit Equity Coalition.
