Adnan Syed, the Woodlawn man at the center of a murder case profiled in the popular Serial podcast, filed a motion Monday asking to be released on bail.

Syed, who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 2000, was granted a new trial in June, almost two years after the 2014 podcast began to raise questions about the case. A judge granted Syed a new trial due to inconsistencies in cellphone records that placed Syed in Leakin Park, where Lee's body was found.

State prosecutors are appealing that decision, and in the meantime, Syed has asked to be released from prison.

"Syed has now served more than 17 years in prison based on an unconstitutional conviction for a crime he did not commit. He has no history of violence other than the State's allegations in this case, and if he released he would pose no danger to the community," Syed's lawyers wrote. "He is also not a flight risk; it makes no sense that he would run from the case he has spent more than half his life trying to disprove."
