A Baltimore health clinic that caters to the city's most vulnerable populations is experiencing turmoil after five supervisors were abruptly fired amid an effort to unionize staff.
Last week, five supervisors, including a nurse practitioner who had been on staff for nine years, were fired from Chase Brexton Health Services, a medical clinic that specializes in care for uninsured populations, including LGBT, transgender and HIV-positive patients.
SEIU 1199 union organizer Dan Owens says the move to unionize came amid a shift that would require practitioners to see more patients.
A Chase Brexton spokesperson said in an email that the center believes a union would lead to "unintended consequences," but it should have communicated better with patients and staff.
