For the first time, Baltimore has a national chess champion and he is only 12 years old.

Cahree Myrick, a 7th grader at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School, won his division at the U.S. Chess Federation's Super Nationals VI in Nashville, Tennessee earlier in May.

Myrick, who beat out 249 competitors from 28 states, was honored by Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh Wednesday.

"I just like to thank my family and friends and especially my coaches for teaching me," Myrick said. "And my friends for helping me practice playing games with me to get through everything and just everyone who believed in me and were confident I could do it."

Myrick was a part of the Roland Park chess team, who placed 13th out of 44 teams at the chess tournament.
