BROOKLYN PARK, Md. (WMAR) -
Anne Arundel County Police are working to figure out what caused a deadly pedestrian accident.
Police say at about 7:45 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to reports of a collision on southbound Ritchie Highway at 11th Avenue.
Once on the scene, police determined that the pedestrian, Cheryl Knick, 57, had been struck by a GMC 1500 pickup. The investigation has revealed that the pickup truck was traveling south on Ritchie Highway when Knick was crossing the street.
Knick was not in the designated crosswalk and failed to yield the right of way to vehicles traveling on Ritchie Highway. The crosswalk in that area is located about 65 feet north of where the crash happened.
The pickup tried to swerve to avoid Knick, but was unable to avoid the impact.
Knick was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police do not believe that speed was a factor in the crash, however, pedestrian conspicuity appears to be.
