ANNAPOLIS - Annapolis police are warning area residents of a phone scam after getting reports of callers claiming to be federal agents and threatening arrest if fines aren’t paid.
Two calls involving a man claiming to be with the U.S. Department of the Treasury or the federal government have recently been reported to police. The caller tells the person on the phone that they owe either back taxes or a fine and could be charged with federal crimes unless they pay.
The caller called himself Agent Mark Brown in once instance and simply Dominic in the second call.
In both instances, when the person on the other end of the line asked for more information, the man hung up the phone.
Police believe the caller is targeting older Annapolis residents.
