Crews in Anne Arundel County are working to assess a sinkhole that opened in the Harwood area Thursday.
The hole, along Sands Road, is about 5 feet in diameter and 15 feet deep. Sands Road is closed between Chinquapin Crest Drive and Branch View Court.
The road crumbled during heavy rain Thursday morning.
“Corrugated steel pipe that completely eroded and rusted away and because of that he water came out of the opening and washed the dirt out,” said Roland Jackson, who lives nearby.
“It just looks like this big cave and it's really huge,” said 11-year-old Julia Fitzwater.
Her bus usually travels down Sands Road to get her to school in the morning; that may not be happening anytime soon.
“It's kind of scary because you never know when it's going to happen, and it just all of a sudden appeared,” she said.
There is no word on how long Sands Road will need to be closed. Anne Arundel County Police recommend using Bayard and Harwood Roads as alternate routes.
