Anne Arundel County Police were called to the Exxon at Ridge and Annapolis roads around 1:35 a.m. Thursday after a customer walked into the gas station and found the clerk, later identified as Rajinder Kumar of Glen Burnie, injured or unconscious.
His owner of the Exxon has seen the surveillance video.
"Raj was leaning on the counter and he just backed off. He had a cell phone in his hand, and he was on a phone call with somebody and he just backed off," said Nabeel Malik. "The guy tried to shoot him the first time, it didn't work out. The second time, it didn't work out either. Third tme he shot him and he fell right there," he said.
Malik says Kumar, 49, was from India. He was living in Glen Burnie and sending money home to his wife, his son, and daughter.
Paramedics and responding officers determined the attendant was dead and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, police said.
Surveillance video shows a man walking into the Exxon shortly after 1 a.m., confronting and shooting the Kumar, taking cash from behind the counter then running away, according to police.
