An Anne Arundel County Police Department employee was suspended after he posted racially insensitive comments about a weekend homicide at the University of Maryland.

Police said Welby Burgone, a civilian employee in the Communications Section, was suspended within hours of the department becoming aware of an inappropriate Facebook post regarding the death of Richard Collins III at the University of Maryland. Burgone is a former police academy recruit, according to police.
Police said the Burgone’s post “was extremely insensitive and appeared to be racially motivated.”
Anne Arundel County Police Chief Timothy Altomare said, "The actions of this employee are a betrayal of the values of the Anne Arundel County Police Department." He continued, "Any employee who espouses or supports hateful or racist ideology will be held accountable and we will not allow the public's trust in their police department to be eroded.”
